District Athletics

On Thursday 7th September, a group of 54 Year 3-6’s competed in the annual Noble Park District Athletics Competition.

We competed in both Track and Field events. The competition was a challenge but most of the students placed in their events. Any student who came first or second in their event goes off to compete in the Divisions.

Thanks to our efforts, support, and good sportsmanship, our school came FIRST overall out of the 11 competing schools which has never happened before!

We are very proud of our achievements and look forward to the next round of competition.

Rugby Gala Day 2916

On Thursday 31st August, 62 of our Year 5/6 students competed in the annual Rugby League Gala Day at Westall Primary School.

When we arrived, each team (Girls Tag A, B & C teams and Boys Tackle A & B teams) and Boys got together and were trained by members of the Melbourne Storm before the competition began.

After the preliminary rounds, the two boys teams finished on top of the ladder and therefore played off in the Grand Final. After two hard fought games, the boy’s teams both were runners up.

The girls A tag team also finished on top of their pool. The girls B team finished second in their pool which meant these two teams had to play against each other for the right to play in the Grand Final. After a very even game, the A team won.  Then in the Grand Final, after another evenly played game, the girl’s team were runners up.

All the teams demonstrated sportsmanship and determination. They represented the school well! Congratulations!!!

We owe a big thank you to Mrs Crilly for organising training sessions, the teams and allowing us to go along to compete against other schools. Also, thanks to Mrs Medina, Mrs Anna, Mrs Kapsalis and Miss Carlson for coming along and supporting the teams.

We all had a great day!

Science – It’s Electrifying!

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been learning about Electricity – Circuits.

We were each given a Circuit Kit which consisted of a battery pack, switch, wires and light bulbs. We had to design and construct a functioning ‘Light/Lamp’. Here are a few of our finished ones!

We look forward to sharing all of them with you!

Monash Science Electricity Incursion

Today we were lucky to have Sally come in to begin our Science unit about ‘Electricity’. She managed to teach us as much she could about electricity in ONE hour!
Sally taught us about volts, batteries, voltage, currents, circuits, insulators and conductors. We were all given the opportunity to create our own circuits – a basic circuit, series circuit and parallel circuits!
We then got to add buzzers, fans and switches to our circuits.
Sally explained that some things can be insulators and others can be conductors of energy. We explored a number of materials and identified whether they were insulators and conductors. Did you know that potatoes, apples and lemons are conductors???
Lastly, we got to use a ‘device’ that enabled us to experience what it feels like to be electrocuted! Lots of us found it difficult to keep our fingers on the buttons for too long!
Have a look at the photos and let us know what you think.

What did you learn from Sally at our incursion?
Did you enjoy the experience? Why? Why not?

Lego Robots

Towards the end of Term 2, the Year 5/6’s constructed Robots.

In groups of 3, we followed the online instructions to create our robots. We each had roles to complete which we swapped throughout the process. We then took turns to create Cose for the Robots which allowed them to move, change colour, make sounds, etc.

We had a great time and look forward to completing the next challenge during Term 3.

Did you enjoy constructing your Robot?

Why did/didn’t you enjoy it?

Animal Research Reports & Google Drawing Avatars

This term, we have been learning about Endangered Animals. We visited Healesville Sanctuary. This was where we encountered many Australian animals that are currently threatened or endangered.
We chose one of these to be the center of our research.
We were each given a grid to begin our planning. We jotted down information or keywords we came across whilst researching.
We then worked on writing paragraphs and understanding the structure of an Information Report.
We each write a Report about our chosen animal. We also used Google Drawing to create an Avatar of the animal. W
Check out our hard work!

Inside Out

This term during SEL, we have watched Inside Out. It is about a girl named Riley who is 11 years old. She moves house and leaves her friends and most of her memories behind. The feelings in her head including joy, sadness, fear, anger and disgust work together to make Riley happy again.

We have been talking about when we feel joy, sadness, disgust, fear and anger in our lives. This week, we created a class ‘Feelings artwork’. We chose the colours that best represent our current feelings and printed them onto small canvases.

Here they are…

Here are some of our feeling reflections…

I have felt sadness when I got into a fight with someone and couldn’t say sorry. I am sad when someone feels sad because of me. I feel sad when I have to choose between my friends. I have felt sad when I couldn’t talk to someone about my issues.

I feel fear when there is any test or exam coming up. There is too much pressure when there is only one day left to actually revise. When the day has come, my heart beats really quick. When I am fearful, I can forget quite a lot of things, even when I revised nearly ten times. Somehow when I am afraid in a test, my score usually ends up to be quite good.

I feel happy and joyful when everyone around me is happy and is enjoying themselves. When other people are happy, I can relax more. It’s kind of like the saying “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.” because if one person does not feel happy, or are not enjoying themselves, it spoils it not only for me but for the whole team. When everyone is happy, I’m happy.

When have you felt sadness, fear, disgust, joy or anger in your life?

Healesville Sanctuary

On Monday 1st May, the 5/6 level traveled to Healesville Sanctuary to introduce this terms inquiry unit.

We were introduced to some of Australia’s most endangered species.
We got to have close-up encounters with some of them too!
One of the Sanctuary’s rangers told us what we can do it help endangered species.

Which was your favourite animal? Why?
What was something you learnt whilst at Healesville Sanctuary?
What are some of the things we can do to support endangered species?

Did you enjoy the day? Why? Why not?
